A couple weeks ago I started a new pre and post-workout strategy. Something basic, something simply and something I don’t have to think about too much each day.
Strength Days: Protein shake with UCAN (sometimes some fruit too)
Cardio Days: Protein Coffee (like this chocolate hazelnut recipe)
BCAA’s and Creatine
1 hour post-workout:
Balanced meal with protein + carbs (some fat if I’m bulking)
So now I make delicious protein coffee twice a week before I do my cardio. This is the only coffee I drink during the week too. Other mornings I have tea that isn’t caffeinated. I’m so glad I’ve weened myself off caffeine. Feels great!
The reason I drink this before cardio is the caffeine does help get me through it and the combo of that with protein is that I’ll burn more fat while I’m exercising. It’s not until a ways AFTER finishing the workout that I get some carbs in and this is to ensure I’m burning mostly fat. The protein before and the BCAA’s during ensure I’m not breaking down muscle tissue for energy.
Chocolate Hazelnut Protein Coffee
A pre-workout drink that supports energy production and lean body mass growth. This coffee is unlike your regular cup because it's full of chocolate and hazelnut flavor!
- 1 serving chocolate protein powder I use plant-based
- 1 cup brewed coffee
- almond milk, or milk of choice quantity is based on preference
- 2 tbsp chopped hazelnuts
Mix everything in a blender on high speed until hazelnuts are broken down completely. Serve hot, just like it's your morning coffee!
I also made this one morning with just a shot of espresso from our cappuccino machine. We didn't have any regular coffee grounds so I used the espresso with more milk than usual. Both work and taste great!
